We have experience of undertaking a variety of different major commercial and industrial electrical contracts.

We were contracted to complete 2 major projects in Peckham and White City which involved installing the sub-mains power to a number of individual blocks of residential flats. These projects ran simultaneously over a period of 1 year.

We have also carried out work in a number of commercial offices; either complete new installations or alterations to existing installations. We understand the need of some businesses to 'work through' renovations and we work alongside the companies to minimise any disruption that can occur.

We have also completed a rewire in a primary school in Chelsea and we are currently designing the electrical specification for the Swiss Church.

The majority of our electrical work is in residential properties – this ranges from single one hour call outs to complete re-wires and multi-dwelling developments.

We have a small works department which deals with all projects with a value of less than £3000. If you require a quotation we will contact you to discuss your requirements initially by phone. If our estimator feels that a site visit is required in order to submit a firm quotation then he will arrange this for you. This is a no obligation free quotation.

It is common for us to have 2 to 3 large electrical contracts running at one time. These are usually single residential properties undergoing major refurbishments or new-builds. The duration of these projects is usually a year or more and we have a team of electricians working on them at all times. These projects are always very complex and involve liaison with architects, M&E consultants and quantity surveyors – all of which we are very happy to be part of.

We always have a dedicated site foreman assigned to each project and our admin office is experienced in keeping paperwork and information requests flowing throughout the project. Accurate documentation from tender stage to final account is essential to prevent any miscommunication during the project.

We often work on behalf of Landlords or Property Maintenance Companies and we are familiar with the rules and regulations relating to electrical safety for tenants and landlords.

Landlords should ensure that the electrical installation (fixed wiring, etc) is safe to use. The Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 requires landlords to ensure the electrical installation is safe when the tenancy begins, and that it is maintained in a safe condition throughout that tenancy.

One way of ensuring safety is to undertake a regular visual inspection of the installation, looking for any obvious signs of damage such as damaged cables; socket-outlets showing scorch marks, etc. In addition, the Institution of Electrical Engineers recommends that electrical installations are formally inspected and tested by a competent person on change of occupancy, and at least once every ten years.

Formal inspection and testing should only be undertaken by someone competent to do such work, such as an Approved Contractor. Formal inspection and testing should be more frequent where the risk is found to be greater, for instance where the installation is very old, where damage is regularly found during inspections, etc.

PAT TESTING (Portable Appliance Testing)

Official guidance issued by the Department of Trade and Industry strongly advises estate agents, letting agents, landlords and anyone else who lets furnished accommodation to seek independent advice as to who is responsible for the safety electrical appliances supplied in the course of business.

If landlords provide any electrical appliances (cookers, kettles, toasters, washing machines, immersion heaters, etc) as part of the tenancy, the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1994 require them to ensure the appliances are safe to use when first supplied. Each time the property is re-let, it will be classed as supplying to that tenant for the first time.

Landlords therefore needs to maintain the electrical equipment they supply, taking reasonably practicable precautions to ensure the appliances are safe.

Periodic Inspection & Testing Certificates

NICEIC Periodic Inspection Reports are an industry standard report accepted by local authorities for licensing purposes, insurance and mortgage companies and health and safety requirements.

The purpose of periodic inspection and testing is to determine whether the installation is safe for continued use. All electrical installation work in the UK is carried out to BS 7671 the Requirements for Electrical Installations, our NICEIC Periodic Inspection Reports checks compliance with these regulations.

Smart Sparks Engineers are City and Guilds Qualified Electricians, experienced in testing and providing certificates for landlords and employers to help them comply with current regulations.

Electrical Installation Certificates

We are often asked to provide 'Electrical Installation Certificates' as this is a common requirement from Building Control.

We can only issue these particular certificates when we have carried out the installation ourselves. If for whatever reason your electrician did not provide you with this certificate then we can carry out a 'Periodic Inspection' as above and most councils will accept this if you explain the circumstances.

Domestic Visual Condition Reports

We are often approached by individuals who are looking to purchase a property but are concerned about the existing electrical installation.

Our domestic visual condition report usually takes around an hour to complete so it provides a cost effective way of unearthing any of the major electrical faults on the installation.

We are happy to provide an estimate showing our costs to rectify the faults found and many of our clients go on to use this as a negotiating tool during the purchasing process.

Terms and Conditions:

Hourly rates:

All the above rates exclude the supply of materials and are exclusive of VAT (17.5% at present)

Our minimum callout is 1 hour and after that we charge in 30 minute increments.

Day rates:

A day rate is calculated upon 8hrs. If more than 5hrs are spent then the day will be capped at the day rate of £320.00. This will be the maximum cost for the work for any given day.

Materials:

Materials supplied by Smart Sparks Electrical will be charged at trade price plus 20% mark up.

Material Collection:

Material collection time for non stock items will be kept to a minimum and any charge will be agreed with the customer in advance and will not exceed £60 + vat.

Invoice & Payment

A booking fee of the first hour will be taken upon confirmation of the booking. This will then be deducted from the final invoice.

Cancellations require 24hrs notice – if this notice is given the booking fee will be refunded in full.

Payment must be made in full by credit card, cheque or cash to the engineer upon receipt of invoice.

Business customers can apply for 14 days credit on presentation of company trading details and subject to a credit search.
